Finasteride is prescribed drug used to help prevent further hair loss. Male pattern baldness is a common type of hair loss and develops due to the shrinking of the hair follicles. Hair is made of many hair follicles, each lasting approximately 3 years. The shrinking of the hair follicles eventually leads to thin hair that doesn’t grow out of the skin surface.

The shrinking of the hair follicles is caused by male hormones changes. Hair follicles convert testosterone into another hormone called dihydrotestosterone. Hair follicles affected by baldness become sensitive to this new hormone and causing the follicle itself to shrink.

Treatment with Finasteride can help prevent further hair loss. It stops the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone. Finasteride can only be prescribed by a doctor/surgeon and is not available on the NHS.

Finasteride should only be used by men and must not be taken by anyone under the age of 18. While there are no major side-effects, there may be a loss in sex drive and a reduced ability to get an erection. For this reason, some men stop the treatment early and do not receive the full benefits.

Your hair growth may start to improve within a few months, although it may take up to a year or so to see full benefits.

Finasteride is taken orally with or without food, usually once daily or as directed by your doctor.
